Abstract
The old conception that every species is characterized by only one karyotype has had to be revised in recent years, due to the fact that the early conclusions had often been based on observations of only a few individuals in a single population. Modem tissue culture techniques, particularly making use of peripheral blood, have made it possible to investigate a large number of individuals within a short period of time and it has then been shown in most species of domestic animals that polymorphism rather than monomorphism is the rule.
