Heritability is arguably the most important single concept in the application of genetics to animal breeding. As such, much has been written about heritability and it is difficult to say anything new. Thus much of this paper will comprise a review of some aspects of heritability estimation, but I will then try to put some of these problems into an operational perspective. No attempt will be made to give a comprehensive survey as I shall concentrate on those areas which interest me most.
