Abstract

Inbreeding has long been recognized as a potential and practical tool for the genetic improvement of plant varieties. But animals unlike plants have some severe handicaps that have prevented inbreeding, by close matings, from becoming an established breeding practice in most farm animals. Relatively low reproductive rates, the inability to reproduce by selfing and severe inbreeding depression
