Abstract

In C ontinental E urope beef production is based on purebred dual-purpose cattle w hereas in the N ew W orld the m ain source of beef is from purebred beef herds, m ainly of the traditional B ritish breeds. In B ritain there is an im portant inter-relationship betw een the dairy and beef industries w hich allow s crossbreeding and the associated benefits of heterosis and com plem entarity to be exploited in providing beef cattle for breeding and for slaughter.
