Selecting and breeding beef cattle with the objective of increasing efficiecy of the total production system certainly predates Mendelian genetics and has been widely applied. Post-Mendelian animal breeding procedures have evolved giving increasingly more attention to larger components. Quantitative techniques that give attention to the total production unit have been developed in recent years; these techniques have come to be known as systems analysis.
