The fact that the 2nd World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production devoted both a Plenary Session and a Symposium to disease resistance genetics marks a "coming of age" of this discipline and indicates the growing interest of practical breeders and researchers in the utilization of genetic resistance to diseases in livestock improvement. The diversity of the topics of the four papers in this Plenary Session reflects the complexity of this problem area.
