Breeding programmes aiming at increased genetic merit of the sheep may be based both on the crossbreeding and selection within pure breeds. To obtrain a continuous genetic progress, selection within breeds or lines should always be included. The gain from a breeding programme may be affected by a series of factors. Apparently well organized sheep improvement programmes have been established in many countries during the last ten to fifteen years. It is however, difficult to make comparisons between programmes, since there are very few estimates of realized genetic gain reported.
