Although the herd mate and contemporary comparison methods of Henderson (1956) and Robertson (1960) revolutionaised the sire evaluation programme and led to much genetic progress in European countires and USA, the method allowed no genetic trend and assumed sires of herd mates averaged the same for daughters of all sires. The new best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) and simplified regressed least squares (SRLS) methods corrects the above mentioend problems.
