Abstract

Haemoglobin polymorphism in cattle was one of the earliest system of genetic polymorphism to be reported (Cabannee and Seraln, 19j5; after the development of the starch gel electrophoresis technique by Smithies in 19S5. Since then genetically determined electrophoretic heterogeneity of bovine haemoglobin has bean extensively studied by many workers among diversified cattle populations. A codominant system of inheritance with two most common haemoglobin (Hb) alleles v iz .. Hb and Hb has been reported in many Indian breeds by various workers (Naik fit aj,. 1965, 1969| Son at ^1. 1966; Shankar, 1972; Singh et fll. 1972; Sen Gupta, 1976; Singh and Bhat, 1980). Tha present study describes the status of this polymorphism among thres zebu milch breeds of Indian origin and their crossbred animals with the exotic breeds.
