Abstract
The field of molecular genetics has made a series of major advances during the last half-decade which togeth er hold the potential for the total reorganization of conventional animal breeding procedures. The new tech n olog y has made it possible to identify and isolat DNA sequences of known function from many different sources and to recombine them in vitro without regard to the boundaries o f species , phylum o r kingdom (for reviews: Man iatis, 1980; Dawid and W ahli, 1979).
