Abstract

Fitness components of breeding objectives are of importance for between- breed selection, especially so in developing countries. The actuarial approach of population dynamics and the factorial method of assessing feed energy requirements can be combined to model overall productivity. This is exemplified using parameters for smallholder dairying in Kenya. Feed energy efficiency is total output value per kg of dry matter intake. This index is a base for taking into account other cost factors like feed quality or veterinary expenses.
