Abstract

The paper gives a review of the literature related to performance traits in horse breeding. In the future, traits which are measureable in all horses should be used in prediction of breeding values and genetic trend. Further, corrections for important environmental effects, e.g. the trainer effect, are proposed included in genetic evaluations, and efficient breeding programs have to be developed.
