Abstract

Four genotypes, Holstein-Friesian imported (HFI), Holstein-Friesian nigerian-born (HFN), White Fulani Zebu (WFZ) and their F1 crossbred (HWF) cows were analysed for three lactation traits. The traits were total milk yield per annum (TOLAC), average daily milk yield taken twice daily (DYIELD) and lactation days (LACDAY) of cows kePT Jetween 1989 and 1993 at the Integrated Dairy Farm (IDF) Vom in Nigeria which were analysed with SAS programme. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. TOLAC (kg) were 6722, 7495, 7194 and 6177 for HFI; 772, 1333, 1248 and 1632 for WFZ. For HFN and HWF the 1st TOLAC were 6588 and 4095 kg respectively. The DMY (kg) for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lactations were 21.57, 22.51, 21.66 and 19.20 for HFI while that for WFZ were 4.20, 7.15, 5.95 and 7.13. Also the 1st lactation of HFN and HWF were 22.39 and 14.19. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th LACDY were 306, 339, 337 and 305 d for HFI while WFZ were 174, 172, 199 and 197 d for WFZ. For HFN and HWF these were 284 and 286 d. Out of 76 in-calf heifers of HFI imported, 63, 56, 38 and 17 completed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lactation. For 100 WFZ only 49, 37,
