Abstract

Genetic variation and associations between wean to first service (W2S), farrowing interval (FI), and total number of piglets born (TNB) were evaluated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) methodology. Heritability estimates for TNB, W2S, and FI were 0.10, 0.02 and 0.05, respectively. The genetic correlation between W2S and FI was 0.930.15. The genetic correlation between TNB and W2S was 0.150.23 and between TNB and FI was 0.210.20. Permanent environmental effect variance represented 16%, 12%, and 13% of total variance for TNB, W2S, and FI, respectively. More research is needed to examine if it would be beneficial to treat information of different parities as different traits in multiple trait analyses instead of analyzing these traits with a repeatability model.
