Abstract

The study developed selection indices for three major breeds (Duroc, Landrace, Yorkshire) of swine in Korea using 212,448 performance records taken from Korean Animal Improvement Association (KAIA) from 1991 to 2004. The traits considered for the index were: Days to reach 100 kg. (d100k), backfat thickness mode A (bf1), backfat thickness mode B (bf2), total number of piglets born (TNB). Variance components were estimated using MTDFREML (Boldman, et al., 1993). Selection indices were constructed using the procedure outlined by Becker (1967) and restricted selection indices were computed following the methods of Kempthorne and Nordskog (1959). Twelve selection indices each for maternal and paternal were developed. Options were given to the breeders which index to use, the normal or those restricted for backfat thickness although the accuracy of the restricted indices decreased.
