Abstract

Genetic and environmental parameters for the birth weight (BW) of 557 calves of mixed Murrah * Mediterraneo buffalos, born between 1979 and 2001 at CPAFRO/EMBRAPA, Rondonia, Brazil were estimated by animal model through the restricted maximum likelihood. Male calves were heavier than females. Contemporary group, although strongly influencing BW, did not determine a tendency, probably due to the extensive breeding system reflecting environmental conditions throughout the study. For each unit of increase in the dam's postpartum weight, there was an increase of 0.01861 kg in the BW of her offspring. Genetic group and dam's age at birthing did not have an effect on the BW. The estimated heritability of the BW was 0.600.12.
