Abstract

Demand for sheep and goat meat has increased rapidly over the last decade. The role of animal breeding is vital for meeting consumer demands in terms of both quantity and quality of meat products. The success of any sheep and goat meat breeding programme relies on a performance recording programme and a balance of selection strategies for different traits affecting meat production. The traits discussed in this review include: meat yield and meat quality, growth rate, reproduction, survival and disease resistance.
