Abstract
Genetic parameters of six maternal behaviour traits in sows were estimated univariate using an animal threshold model. The heritability coefficients were 0.070.06, 0.060.03, 0.090.02, 0.050.01, 0.030.01, 0.020.02, respectively, for group behaviour, attitude to people, oestrus behaviour, maternal ability, crushing of piglets and savaging of piglets. Additionally genetic correlation between the behaviour traits and between the behaviour traits and litter size were estimated multivariate by REML with a linear model. According to the calculated correlation coefficients selection for better maternal behaviour might not be associated with any negative selection gain regarding the litter size.
