Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for speed index in Quarter Horse racehorses in Brazil. The data provided by the Sorocaba Jockey Club, involved three Brazilian hippodromes, between the years of 1994 and 2003, with 8,968 observations for the speed index (SI), distributed in 2,521 races. The variance components were estimated by the MTGSAM software program, in animal models, and the analysis considered the random effects of the horse and the permanent environment, and the fixed effects of sex, age and race. On basis of predicted breeding value was calculate the genetic trend for speed index for different distances (301, 320, 365 and 402 meters).
